Michael C Place from Build Guest Lecture

Rotring pen was used pre computers, Graphic Design was referred to as commercial art.

Letraset was also used for typography:

Michael initially worked for Neville Brady, famous for Face magazine and popular record sleeve designs from Pink Floyd to the Clash. He also wrote a relevant book named 'The Graphic Language of Neville Brady' rejecting traditional methods of design.

Another man he worked for rejecting of older styles of layout was Rod Clarke, as Michael found a copy of Underground Magazine which cover inspired him. Clarke had a Swiss style with punk influences.

Moving back to doing what Michael loved, designing record sleeves, he then worked for 4AD Records, who designed covers for Ultra vivid scene, Colourbox and Head Over Heels.

Trevor Jackson then employed Michael, an example of his work for Sterio Mc's 'Supernatural':

Again, all these are post digital design , using methods of hand rendered collage which I love.

Moving again to work with Ian Anderson, who designed the Aphex Twins' 'Window Licker':

Gate Crasher the late superclub of Sheffield furthermore commissioned Michael to do some branding, taking promotional shots of industrial areas with overlayed block colours as well as covers for CD's released by the club.
 (1999)

Moving into a more modern era of design, Flying Lotus' first album was designed by Michael. This collage would therefore have been created digitally as opposed to a medium previously adopted by collage artists in the pre digital era.

Michael furthermore features in the film 'Sex, Drugs & Helvetica' and designed Nike's track and field promotion.
